Veteran Pakistani actor Marina Khan has shared the personal story behind embracing her natural grey hair. She also reflected on fame, criticism, humility, and the importance of arts education. During a recent interview, the celebrated actor explained why authenticity has always mattered more to her than chasing temporary success.
Moreover, Marina spoke about the lessons she learned throughout her decades-long career. She also discussed the challenges of overnight fame and encouraged young artists to remain grounded while pursuing their dreams.
Marina Khan Reveals Why She Embraced Her Grey Hair
Marina Khan revealed that her decision to stop colouring her hair was inspired by her mother.
Recalling a childhood memory, she said she once attended a family function where her mother’s appearance immediately caught her attention.
“I recognised her immediately because she was the only woman with grey hair. I then thought to myself, ‘Why shouldn’t I do the same?'”
She explained that frequent hair colouring never appealed to her because of the constant maintenance it required.
“It was very difficult to dye your hair. Once you start, you have to keep doing touch-ups.”
Instead, she chose to embrace her natural appearance, believing that confidence comes from accepting oneself.
Experimenting With Hairstyles Never Scared Her
Although Marina eventually embraced her grey hair, she said she has always enjoyed experimenting with different hairstyles throughout her career.
“I’ve always loved experimenting with my hair. I’ve even had perms several times. Once, my hair started falling out, but I didn’t worry too much because I knew it would grow back.”
Her willingness to try different looks, she explained, reflects her relaxed approach toward appearance and change.
A Funny Market Incident Still Makes Her Smile
During the conversation, Marina also recalled a humorous experience in one of Karachi’s busy markets.
She explained that she usually walks quickly because crowded markets can become difficult to navigate.
“I usually walk very fast in markets because people tend to bump into you. I suddenly heard someone shouting, ‘Ami!’ At that time, I still had some black hair and braids. Then the child realised the mistake and said, ‘Oh sorry, aunty, aap agaye,’ which made me laugh.”
She remembered the incident with amusement and said it remains one of her favourite memories.
Marina Responds to Criticism of Kya Drama Hai
Marina also addressed criticism surrounding Kya Drama Hai, the television review show she co-hosts with Nadia Khan and Atiqa Odho.
According to her, many viewers react after watching short clips instead of complete episodes.
“The criticism we receive is because people don’t watch the entire episode. They only see snippets or clips taken out of context. At the end of the day, every channel wants views.”
Furthermore, she encouraged actors and artists to accept professional criticism with maturity.
“When a professional criticises your work, take it with a pinch of salt. Don’t take yourself so seriously. If you can’t laugh at yourself, you can’t be happy in life.”
Who Could Play Sanya in a Modern Tanhaiyaan?
Reflecting on Tanhaiyaan (1985), the iconic drama that made her a household name, Marina said she can imagine a younger generation stepping into her famous role of Sanya.
“I think Dananeer or Hania could do it.”
Her comments offered a glimpse into how she views the industry’s emerging talent with optimism.
Marina Khan Warns Against Chasing Overnight Fame
Marina believes lasting success requires patience, education, and consistent effort.
She expressed concern that many newcomers focus only on becoming famous instead of building lasting careers.
“I think some people’s educational grounding and upbringing are not strong enough. They simply want to become famous. But if you haven’t put in the work, how long will that fame last?”
She then pointed to actor Wahaj Ali as an example of someone whose success came after years of dedication.
“Wahaj has been in the industry for a long time but only recently achieved widespread fame. I think that’s a good thing. When fame comes too quickly, people surround you, you make false friends, and it’s easy to lose your grounding. That’s why it’s important to stay humble.”
According to Marina, patience often helps artists appreciate success while staying connected to reality.
Gratitude and Reading Help Keep Life in Perspective
The veteran actor also shared how reading has influenced her outlook on life.
She explained that books remind people to appreciate what they have instead of constantly focusing on what they lack.
“When we go through life, we often take things for granted and complain. Reading reminds you of what’s happening around you and how fortunate you really are.”
She also referred to a well-known motivational passage that highlights the value of health, education, and life’s basic necessities. According to Marina, such reminders help people remain grateful and grounded.
Greater Focus on Arts Education Is Essential
Marina Khan also stressed the need to strengthen arts education across Pakistan.
She believes schools and colleges should provide students with regular opportunities to participate in music, theatre, and performing arts.
“I think when schools and colleges introduce music and drama classes from a young age, it helps nurture talent. When we were growing up, there would only be one annual play and one rehearsal. If students had those opportunities throughout their education, it would make a real difference.”
She added that continuous exposure to creative activities can help discover future performers while supporting the country’s entertainment industry.
Currently, Marina Khan is appearing in the television drama Dr Bahu. She also recently featured in the film Love Guru, continuing her long-standing contribution to Pakistan’s entertainment industry.
