“From Inshallah to Alhamdulillah, Abdul El-Sayed’s victory speech carried a message of gratitude, faith and historic achievement.”
With these words, Abdul El-Sayed celebrated a victory that marked a historic moment in American politics. Addressing supporters in Detroit, he reflected on the journey that brought him to the US Senate. His message carried personal significance, celebrating faith, gratitude and a breakthrough in political representation.
El-Sayed defeated Republican Mike Rogers in Michigan’s November 3, 2026, Senate election. He became the first Muslim elected to the United States Senate. However, his journey to this milestone began long before the election campaign.
From Michigan Roots to Academic Excellence
Born and raised in Michigan, El-Sayed is the son of Egyptian immigrants. His academic journey began at the University of Michigan, where he studied biology and political science. He graduated with highest distinction in 2007 and also played lacrosse for the university.
He later became a Rhodes Scholar and earned a doctorate in public health from the University of Oxford. In 2014, he received his medical degree from Columbia University.
Rather than pursuing clinical practice, El-Sayed focused on public health research and government administration. His research explored how social conditions, inequality and access to services influence people’s health.
Rebuilding Public Health Services
In 2015, El-Sayed became executive director of Detroit’s Health Department. He worked to strengthen public health services and address challenges affecting vulnerable communities.
From 2022 to 2025, he directed Wayne County’s Department of Health, Human and Veterans Services. His work included expanding access to naloxone, addressing lead exposure and improving children’s access to free glasses.
He also supported a medical debt relief initiative targeting up to $700 million in outstanding bills for eligible residents.
From Political Setbacks to a Historic Senate Win
El-Sayed first ran for Michigan governor in 2018 but lost the Democratic primary to Gretchen Whitmer. He later remained active through research, political commentary and his podcast, America Dissected.
In 2026, he entered Michigan’s open Senate race. He defeated Representative Haley Stevens in the Democratic primary before facing Republican Mike Rogers in the general election.
His campaign highlighted Medicare for All, economic fairness, workers’ rights and reducing corporate influence in politics. His victory turned years of public service and political campaigning into a historic achievement, sending a new Muslim voice to the US Senate.
