Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney today condemned an attack on a mosque in Winnipeg on Wednesday night. He called the incident an appalling act of Islamophobia in Canada. According to investigators, no one sustained injury during the attack.
The shooting targeted the Mosque in the Rahma Islamic Centre in Winnipeg, the capital of Manitoba province. Police have launched an investigation, although they have not identified any suspects or announced any arrests.
Investigation continues after attack
In a post on X, Carney expressed relief that no injuries were reported. He also pledged full support for law enforcement agencies working to identify those responsible and bring them to justice.
Meanwhile, Winnipeg police continue gathering evidence to determine the circumstances surrounding the attack. Officials have not released additional details about the suspects or their possible motives.
Muslim council raises concerns
The National Council of Canadian Muslims said individuals fired at the Islamic centre from a moving vehicle. The group also alleged that the attackers struck the building with a blunt weapon while community members were inside.
Furthermore, the council described the incident as part of a growing pattern of anti-Muslim violence across Canada. It claimed similar incidents have occurred almost daily in recent months.
The organisation warned that Islamophobic violence has reached unprecedented levels and risks becoming increasingly common. However, police have not yet confirmed a motive behind the attack and said the investigation remains ongoing.
