Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has launched the fourth phase of the Green Tractor Scheme, with 10,000 subsidised tractors to be distributed among farmers. The digital balloting was held on Wednesday, while the application portal for the programme’s fifth phase was also opened.
The provincial government plans to provide a total of 19,500 tractors during the current fiscal year.
10,000 Tractors Offered Under Phase IV
Under Phase IV, farmers will receive 10,000 tractors ranging from 50 to 65 horsepower.
The Punjab government will provide a subsidy of Rs750,000 per tractor.
During the digital balloting, Masood Khan, son of Lal Khan from Attock, became the first successful applicant to receive a tractor under the latest phase.
The official Punjab Agriculture Department says Phase IV is designed for farmers holding at least five acres of agricultural land.
Phase V to Offer 9,500 High-Powered Tractors
The government has also opened the application process for Phase V of the scheme.
Under this phase, 9,500 tractors ranging from 75 to 125 horsepower will be provided to eligible farmers.
Each tractor will carry a subsidy of Rs1 million.
According to the Punjab Agriculture Department, Phase V targets farmers with land holdings of at least seven acres.
Together, the two phases will provide 19,500 subsidised tractors during the 2026-27 fiscal year.
Rs17.6 Billion Allocated for Scheme
The Punjab government has allocated Rs17.6 billion for the Green Tractor Scheme.
Officials said 24,000 tractors had already been provided to farmers under the programme, with a subsidy of Rs1 million per tractor.
The latest phase also includes locally manufactured and assembled tractors.
During the launch, Maryam Nawaz inspected locally manufactured 90-horsepower and locally assembled 100-horsepower tractors.
More Than 213,000 Farmers Applied
The programme attracted significant interest from farmers across Punjab.
According to the briefing, 213,637 farmers applied, while 128,757 were declared eligible for the digital balloting after verification.
The verification process involved the Punjab Land Records Authority and Nadra.
District-wise quotas were also determined according to the proportion of cultivated land.
Officials said districts including Bhakkar, Jhang, Lodhran and Vehari received comparatively larger shares.
Punjab Expands Agricultural Mechanisation
The Punjab government also highlighted the expansion of agricultural mechanisation under the current programme.
According to the briefing, only 10,000 tractors were distributed to farmers during the previous two decades. In comparison, officials said 35,000 tractors had been distributed during the current government’s two-and-a-half-year period.
Spending on agricultural mechanisation has also increased, with officials reporting Rs3 billion spent over two decades compared with Rs20 billion during the past two-and-a-half years.
Punjab has also witnessed local manufacturing of 90-horsepower tractors and local assembly of 100-horsepower models. The latest expansion is aimed at improving farmers’ access to modern agricultural machinery while increasing mechanisation across the province.
