The federal government has increased the minimum monthly salary for its employees to Rs40,700. The revised salary floor will apply from July 1, 2026.
The decision means federal employees earning below the new threshold will receive additional financial support. The government will provide a special allowance to bring their total monthly earnings up to Rs40,700.The move aims to ensure that no federal government employee receives a monthly salary below the newly approved minimum.
Special Allowance for Lower-Paid Employees
Under the revised arrangement, employees whose monthly earnings remain below Rs40,700 will receive a special allowance. The allowance will cover the difference between their existing monthly salary and the new minimum.
For example, an employee earning less than Rs40,700 will receive enough additional payment to reach the revised salary floor. This approach will directly support employees currently earning at the lower end of the federal pay structure.
Moreover, the government will apply the increase retrospectively from July 1, 2026.
Employees should therefore receive the applicable financial adjustment from the start of the current financial year.
Minimum Salary Rises by Rs3,700
The latest decision increases the previous minimum salary from Rs37,000 to Rs40,700. This represents an increase of Rs3,700 per month. The new salary floor is also around 10 percent higher than the previous level.
The adjustment comes as part of broader changes to federal government employees’ pay during FY2026-27.
As part of those revisions, federal civil employees received a 7 percent ad hoc relief allowance on basic pay from July 1.
Government Expands Pay Relief
The revised minimum salary provides additional support to employees who remain below the newly established threshold. At the same time, the 7 percent relief allowance applies to basic pay under the wider FY2026-27 salary revisions.
The combination of these measures is intended to provide greater financial relief to federal government employees.
The new minimum also creates a clear salary floor across the federal government. Consequently, employees earning below the threshold will receive an adjustment rather than remaining on their previous pay levels.
With the decision taking effect from July 1, employees covered by the arrangement can expect the applicable allowance to reflect the revised minimum.
The government’s latest move therefore increases the minimum monthly earnings for federal employees while adding further financial support through the broader annual pay revisions.
