Two passenger aircraft collided while taxiing at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) on Tuesday morning, officials said.
The incident involved a Delta Air Lines aircraft and an Air Canada plane. The collision occurred as both aircraft were moving around the airport.
Air Canada said its aircraft had arrived from Toronto shortly before the incident. Meanwhile, the Delta plane was preparing to depart for Tokyo’s Haneda Airport.
Delta Plane Strikes Air Canada Aircraft
According to Air Canada, its aircraft was hit by the Delta plane while the Delta aircraft was preparing to leave.
Images from the scene showed part of the Delta aircraft’s wing lodged against the stabilizer of the Air Canada plane.
The collision also removed a curved section from the Delta aircraft’s wing. The section, known as a winglet, became lodged in the other aircraft.
A passenger travelling on the Delta flight said the aircraft was leaving its gate and moving toward the runway.
The passenger also said it appeared that the Air Canada aircraft entered the Delta plane’s path.
Delta Confirms Contact Between Aircraft
Delta confirmed that its aircraft made contact with the Air Canada plane while both aircraft were taxiing at LAX.
“A Delta aircraft made contact with an Air Canada aircraft while taxiing at Los Angeles International Airport,” a Delta spokesperson said.
The airline said the safety of passengers and employees remains its main concern. It also apologised for the disruption and delays caused by the incident.
Both aircraft were removed from service following the collision. However, airport operations at LAX continued as usual, according to an airport representative.
275 Passengers Were on Delta Flight
The Delta aircraft was carrying 275 passengers and 15 crew members, according to the airline.
Information about the number of passengers aboard the Air Canada aircraft was not immediately clear.
Despite the collision, no injuries were reported. The available information did not indicate any passenger or crew injuries from either aircraft.
The incident nevertheless caused disruption as both planes were taken out of service following the contact.
FAA and NTSB Informed
The Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board were informed about the incident.
The two agencies were notified as officials examined the circumstances surrounding the collision.
The incident occurred while the aircraft were taxiing rather than during takeoff or landing. Meanwhile, airport operations continued normally after the planes were removed from service.
Officials will assess the circumstances that led to the two passenger aircraft making contact at the busy Los Angeles airport.
For now, no injuries have been reported, while both aircraft remain out of service following the collision.
