Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has welcomed US President Donald Trumpโs support for the Makkah Joint Defence Agreement. Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Turkiye signed the agreement to strengthen collective security.
In a post on X, Shehbaz Sharif expressed appreciation for Trumpโs comments about the agreement. He said Pakistan would continue working with its allies to support regional stability.
โDeeply appreciate President Donald Trumpโs kind words of support on the signing of the Makkah Joint Defence Agreement.โ
He further said, โTogether with the brotherly Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the Republic of Turkiye, Pakistan will continue to play a constructive role in ensuring the defence of our own countries as well as the entire region.โ
Shehbaz Praises Trumpโs Role in Regional Peace
The prime minister also praised Trump for what he described as decisive leadership in South Asia. He credited the US president with helping prevent a potential nuclear crisis in the region.
โI would also like to once again commend President Trump for his courageous and decisive leadership, which helped avert a nuclear catastrophe in South Asia and saved millions of lives. Durable peace is the most essential prerequisite for a bright and prosperous future for our peoples.โ
Shehbazโs remarks came after Trump publicly welcomed the signing of the three-nation defence agreement. The US president described the pact as an important development for regional security.
Trump Welcomes Makkah Defence Pact
Trump said he was pleased that Saudi Arabia, Turkiye and Pakistan had signed the Makkah Joint Defence Agreement.
“Very happy to see that Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and Pakistan have recently, and finally, signed the Makkah Joint Defence Agreement,”
“It shows how the Middle East is coming together, and how Countries will finally be able to defend themselves in a more meaningful way,” he wrote.
Trump described the agreement as a “BIG, BOLD, IMPORTANT FIRST STEP.”
The three countries signed the agreement on August 7. The pact came amid heightened regional tensions and ongoing conflict between the United States and Iran.
Pact Strengthens Collective Defence
Pakistanโs Foreign Ministry said an attack on one member would be treated as an attack on all three countries. The ministry said the agreement was “intended to strengthen collective deterrence.”
The pact also outlines a “shared commitment to further strengthening their collective security and to promoting peace, security and stability in the region and beyond.”
Moreover, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Turkiye have committed to supporting efforts aimed at resolving the conflict between Iran and the United States.
The agreement therefore extends beyond defence cooperation. It also reflects a broader commitment by the three countries to regional stability and peaceful conflict resolution.
For Pakistan, the pact represents another avenue for strengthening strategic ties with Saudi Arabia and Turkiye. Meanwhile, Trumpโs public support has added further international attention to the agreement and its potential regional impact.
