QUETTA: A 4.8 magnitude earthquake shook parts of Balochistan on Wednesday, sending tremors through Zhob and Chaman. The earthquake caused concern among residents, although authorities reported no immediate casualties or damage.
The National Seismic Monitoring Centre (NSMC) recorded the earthquake at a depth of 15 kilometres. The centre operates under the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD).
According to seismic monitoring officials, the earthquake’s epicentre was located 122 kilometres northeast of Zhob. The relatively shallow depth made the tremors noticeable in nearby areas.
Earthquake Tremors Felt in Zhob and Chaman
Residents in Zhob and Chaman felt the earthquake as the ground shook across parts of northern Balochistan. Authorities have not reported any deaths, injuries or structural damage following the tremors.
Emergency authorities continue to monitor the situation for any developments. Residents in earthquake-prone areas often remain alert after tremors because additional seismic activity can sometimes follow.
The latest earthquake also brought memories of previous major earthquakes in Balochistan. Several districts across the province have experienced damaging seismic activity in recent years.
Zhob and Chaman Previously Hit by Deadly Earthquake
On October 7, 2021, Zhob and Chaman were among several Balochistan districts affected by a powerful 5.9-magnitude earthquake.
The earthquake had its epicentre near Harnai at a depth of 15 kilometres. It struck at around 3:20am while many residents were asleep.
The 2021 earthquake killed at least 20 people and injured more than 300 others. Harnai suffered the heaviest impact, with several buildings collapsing during the disaster.
More than 70 houses were also reported damaged in the affected areas. Rescue teams and military personnel were subsequently deployed to assist residents and support relief operations.
Aftershocks continued for several days following the main earthquake. Authorities remained on alert as teams worked to assess damage and provide assistance.
Chaman Felt Another Strong Earthquake in 2024
Balochistan experienced another notable earthquake in March 2024. Chaman was among the areas affected by a 5.4-magnitude earthquake that struck in the early morning.
The earthquake occurred at around 5:35am. Its epicentre was located approximately 150 kilometres southwest of Quetta at a depth of 35 kilometres.
Tremors from the earthquake were felt across several areas of Balochistan. These included Qila Abdullah, Noshki, Pishin, Dalbandin, Chagai and Quetta.
The repeated seismic activity highlights the earthquake risk faced by communities across Balochistan. However, the latest 4.8-magnitude earthquake has so far caused no reported casualties or damage.
Authorities will continue monitoring seismic activity as a precaution. Residents are also advised to remain cautious and follow official guidance if further tremors occur.
