American actor Walter Koenig, best known for playing Pavel Chekov in the iconic science-fiction franchise Star Trek, has died at the age of 90.
Koenig died at his home in North Hollywood, Los Angeles, on October 25. His representative, Zachery McGinnis, confirmed the news and said his daughter and niece were with him.
The actor became a familiar face to generations of science-fiction fans through his memorable performance as the Enterprise’s Russian navigator.
Koenig’s Memorable Star Trek Career
Koenig joined Star Trek: The Original Series in 1967, during its second season. He appeared in 36 episodes before the original series ended in 1969.
His character, Ensign Pavel Chekov, brought humour and energy to the starship Enterprise’s crew. The character also represented cooperation between rival nations during the Cold War.
Koenig later reprised Chekov in seven Star Trek feature films released between 1979 and 1991. He continued contributing to the franchise through later projects, including a voice appearance in Star Trek: Picard in 2023.
Beyond the Star Trek Universe
Although Star Trek remained his most recognised work, Koenig built a diverse career in television, film and writing.
He played Alfred Bester in the science-fiction series Babylon 5. He also appeared in shows such as Columbo, Ironside and The Incredible Hulk.
Furthermore, Koenig worked as a screenwriter and wrote Chekov’s Enterprise, a book published in 1980. His creative work extended beyond acting and demonstrated his broader interest in storytelling.
Co-Star George Takei Pays Tribute
Koenig’s longtime Star Trek co-star George Takei shared an emotional tribute following the news.
Takei remembered Koenig as more than an actor, describing him as a writer, teacher, thoughtful person and loyal friend. The two actors maintained a friendship spanning nearly six decades.
Koenig’s death marks the loss of another important figure from the original Star Trek cast. His portrayal of Chekov remains a significant part of the franchise’s enduring television and film legacy.
