Northern Alaska Begins Continuous Daylight Season
Residents of Utqiagvik witnessed the return of the sun early Monday morning as the Arctic city officially entered its annual midnight sun season after 65 consecutive days of darkness.
The sun rose above the horizon at approximately 2:57 a.m. local time, marking a major seasonal transition for the northernmost community in the United States. Moreover, the sun will now remain continuously visible for the next 84 days and will not set again until August 2.
Every year, Utqiagvik experiences extreme seasonal light changes because of its location far above the Arctic Circle. During winter, the city enters a period known as polar night, when the sun stays below the horizon for weeks. However, the return of sunlight signals the arrival of spring and the beginning of extended Arctic daylight.
Residents often celebrate the event as a symbol of renewal after enduring months of freezing temperatures and prolonged darkness.
Extreme Arctic Conditions Shape Daily Life
The midnight sun phenomenon occurs because the Earth tilts on its axis while orbiting the sun. Consequently, regions near the poles experience either constant daylight or continuous darkness depending on the season.
In Utqiagvik, extended daylight significantly affects daily routines, tourism, and outdoor activities throughout summer. Additionally, warmer temperatures and increased sunlight create better conditions for travel, fishing, and wildlife observation across northern Alaska.
Scientists and climate experts also closely monitor Arctic regions during this period because environmental changes often appear more rapidly near the poles.
Meanwhile, visitors from around the world travel to Utqiagvik each year to experience the rare natural event firsthand and witness the unique rhythm of life under nonstop sunlight.
