The United States has struck Iran’s strategically important Qeshm Island as Washington continues diplomatic efforts to prevent a renewed conflict with Tehran, The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) reported.
According to the report, citing US officials, Monday’s attack formed part of a series of limited military strikes conducted quietly in recent weeks. Officials described the operations as defensive measures intended to restrict Iran’s ability to threaten commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz.
Qeshm Island holds significant military importance because of its location near the entrance to the strategic waterway. It also hosts an underground missile facility and a naval base.
Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump has publicly downplayed the possibility of renewed hostilities, claiming Washington had already won the war. He also ruled out additional strikes after Tuesday’s midterm elections when questioned about further military action.
However, US officials told the WSJ that Trump was still considering military options, including additional airstrikes, economic sanctions and tighter trade restrictions. The military has also prepared for potentially broader operations.
The developments come as Trump and Vice President JD Vance express optimism about negotiations with Tehran. However, Iranian leaders have warned that Washington would face retaliation if it resumes military operations.
