The United States has decided to establish two military bases in Greenland. According to plans, the US will reopen a Cold War-era military base in southern Greenland and establish another military presence on the island’s east coast.
The initiative is part of a security agreement the US, Denmark, and Greenland are signing today.
The planned sites are Narsarsuaq and Mestersvig. Narsarsuaq previously housed the US Bluie West One military base, which Washington closed in the 1950s.
Meanwhile, Mestersvig currently serves as an outpost for Denmark’s Sirius Dog Sled Patrol, a special forces unit.
New Deal to Expand US Military Presence
The three governments are expected to sign the agreement at the United Nations General Assembly in New York. The agreement’s text remains unpublished, and its final details will only emerge after the signing, according to people familiar with the negotiations. The deal would expand the existing US military presence beyond Pituffik Space Base, the only current American military installation in Greenland.
During the Cold War, the United States operated 17 military installations across Greenland and stationed more than 10,000 personnel there. Today, around 150 US military personnel remain at Pituffik Space Base.
Arctic Security to Come Under NATO Framework
Denmark has said the agreement would place Arctic security within a broader NATO framework rather than leaving responsibility solely with Washington and Copenhagen. The development follows months of tensions after President Donald Trump repeatedly expressed interest in US control of Greenland.
His earlier comments triggered diplomatic tensions within NATO and prompted Denmark and Greenland to negotiate with Washington. Greenland remains a semi-autonomous territory within the Kingdom of Denmark. Danish officials have said the agreement respects Greenland’s sovereignty, while the exact legal framework remains unclear before the signing.
