Democrats are moving closer to regaining control of the US House of Representatives while making significant gains in the Senate during the 2026 midterm elections.
Media projections indicate a strong Democratic performance, delivering a major setback to President Donald Trump and congressional Republicans. The results reflect growing voter dissatisfaction with the administration’s policies and economic performance.
In a major breakthrough, Democrat Annie Andrews secured a historic Senate victory in South Carolina, becoming the first Democrat to win a Senate seat in the state since 1998. She defeated Republican candidate Darline Graham, who had received Trump’s endorsement.
Meanwhile, Democrat Roy Cooper also secured a projected victory in North Carolina’s Senate race. These victories gave Democrats two of the four additional seats needed to control the Senate.
Democrats also maintained their Senate seats in Georgia and New Hampshire. Additionally, media projections indicated that the party had secured four Republican-held House seats.
In Georgia, former Atlanta mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms made history by becoming the first Black woman elected governor in the United States.
The election results reflected widespread frustration over rising living costs, fuel prices and Trump’s handling of the Iran conflict.
Although several Senate races remained undecided, Democrats appeared increasingly confident about challenging Republican control of Congress. The final results could significantly reshape Washington’s political balance and limit Trump’s legislative agenda.
