A US lawmaker has sought impeachment of the Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth for violations of rules in war against Iran.
Republican US Representative Thomas Massie introduced articles of impeachment against Hegseth over alleged unauthorised military action against Iran.
Massie filed the measure as a privileged resolution, requiring the House to consider it within two legislative days.
He spent more than 67 minutes on Tuesday reading the 34-page resolution containing eight articles of impeachment on the House floor.
Massie accused Hegseth of violating constitutional requirements and congressional war powers by continuing military operations without congressional authorisation.
He alleged that Hegseth had continued hostilities in Iran beyond limits established under the War Powers Resolution.
Eight allegations against Hegseth
The resolution contains eight allegations covering military operations in Iran, civilian casualties, maritime strikes, free speech and actions involving Venezuela and Yemen.
Massie alleged that Hegseth ignored congressional measures directing the withdrawal of US forces from hostilities in Iran.
He also accused the defence secretary of failing to follow laws designed to reduce civilian casualties during military operations.
Another article alleges that US maritime operations against suspected drug traffickers resulted in at least 221 deaths.
Massie further accused Hegseth of retaliating against Democratic Senator Mark Kelly over criticism of the defence secretary and military policy.
The resolution also alleges that Hegseth directed an operation to seize former Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro without sufficient constitutional or legal authority.
The final article concerns the US military campaign in Yemen, which Massie claims began without congressional authorisation or an imminent threat.
Massie said Congress must uphold its constitutional responsibilities and hold officials accountable for alleged violations.
The allegations remain claims contained in Massie’s impeachment resolution and do not constitute established findings against Hegseth.
