The United States and Iran held a three-hour meeting in New York on Wednesday as diplomatic efforts continued on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly.
US President Donald Trump’s special representative Steve Witkoff met Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and members of his delegation.
Trump confirmed the meeting and described it as productive. He said both sides agreed to hold another meeting in the near future.
The US president also said reaching an agreement was in Iran’s interest.
Witkoff later said on X that he held detailed discussions with the Iranian delegation through intermediaries.
Iran sets conditions for Hormuz reopening
Meanwhile, Iran has reportedly offered to reopen the Strait of Hormuz within one week if the United States lifts its blockade on Iranian ports.
Iran has also demanded the immediate release of frozen assets and an end to fighting on all fronts, according to foreign media reports.
Officials have reportedly conveyed the conditions to the United States as negotiations continue.
Trump says progress made in talks
Trump said progress had been made toward reaching an agreement with Iran during discussions with Arab and Islamic leaders in New York.
“I hope that soon both sides will reach a settlement,” Trump said.
He also claimed Iran was eager to negotiate with Washington and said Witkoff had held important meetings with mediators.
Trump further claimed that Iran’s economy and military capabilities had suffered severe damage.
Meanwhile, Araghchi continued diplomatic engagements with world leaders during the UNGA session.
He met Qatar’s Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman and held separate talks with the foreign ministers of Italy, Switzerland and Belarus.
