Iran has cancelled flights from Tehran to Baghdad and Muscat as new restrictions targeting Iranian airlines begin to affect international aviation.
Iran’s Civil Aviation Organisation said the two airports would stop accepting Iranian flights from midnight on Wednesday. Authorities are also discussing alternative arrangements for affected routes.
Baghdad Flights Could Be Diverted to Najaf
Iranian aviation authorities are working to redirect Baghdad-bound flights to Najaf airport in Iraq.
Najaf is an important destination for Iranian travellers, particularly those visiting religious sites. However, the proposed rerouting remains subject to discussions with Iraqi authorities.
Iraq has separately ordered its civil aviation authority to suspend Iranian flights to Baghdad from Wednesday, according to sources cited by Reuters.
The decision followed US warnings that airports and other service providers could face secondary sanctions for supporting Iranian airlines.
Muscat Flights Also Suspended
Muscat airport will also stop accepting Iranian flights under the new restrictions.
Iranian officials are continuing discussions with Oman over the measures affecting flights between the two countries.
Meanwhile, Iranian authorities said other international flights, including services to Istanbul, would continue according to schedule.
US Sanctions Put Pressure on Iranian Airlines
The cancellations come as the United States increases pressure on Iran’s aviation sector.
US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said Iranian airlines would effectively lose access to international aviation services from September 23.
He warned that foreign airports and service providers could face US penalties if they continue providing services to Iranian carriers.
These services include fuel, landing facilities and ticket sales.
The US Treasury also announced sanctions against 36 targets linked to Iran’s aviation sector earlier this month.
International Flights Face Growing Pressure
The latest cancellations represent an immediate impact of the wider restrictions on Iranian international air services.
Iranian aviation authorities are now seeking alternative arrangements for some routes while maintaining other international connections.
The developments could further restrict Iran’s access to international aviation services as US sanctions and related measures take effect.
