A US Air Force F-16 fighter jet crashed during a training mission near Traverse City, Michigan, on Thursday.
The aircraft was assigned to the Texas Air National Guard’s 149th Fighter Wing.
The unit said the F-16 Fighting Falcon was conducting a routine training mission when it crashed.
The pilot successfully ejected from the aircraft, according to the Texas Air National Guard.
The pilot’s condition was not immediately disclosed.
“The incident is under investigation,” the unit said in a statement.
Evacuation Order Issued
Grand Traverse County Emergency Management issued an evacuation order following the crash.
Officials said the order was in effect because of the aircraft accident.
Authorities have not yet released details about the cause of the crash or whether anyone on the ground was injured.
US Senator Gary Peters said he was aware of the crash near Traverse City.
He said he was closely monitoring the situation while authorities gathered more information.
Investigators are expected to examine the aircraft and surrounding area to determine what caused the F-16 to crash during the training flight.
