Ed Sheeran’s Loop Tour has faced major disruption after Macklemore was removed from the lineup following pro-Palestinian remarks.
The controversy intensified when four other supporting acts withdrew from Sheeran’s tour in solidarity with Macklemore.
The dispute began after Macklemore said “Free Palestine” during a September 5 performance at New Jersey’s MetLife Stadium. He also criticised Israeli government policies involving Gaza and the West Bank.
Macklemore Removed From Ed Sheeran Tour
Macklemore had been scheduled to perform at eight of Sheeran’s remaining 10 US concerts.
However, tour promoter Messina Touring Group said venue owners would not allow concerts featuring the rapper to proceed. Macklemore subsequently announced his departure from the tour.
The rapper said he and Sheeran had held difficult discussions about the situation.
Sheeran later clarified that Macklemore’s removal was not his decision. He said the promoter made the decision after venues indicated they would not host shows with Macklemore.
“Macklemore coming off tour was the promoter’s decision, it was not mine,” Sheeran wrote on Instagram.
Four Supporting Acts Withdraw
The controversy grew when four other artists announced their withdrawal from Sheeran’s tour.
Finneas, Lukas Graham, Aaron Rowe and Irish folk band Beoga all stepped away from upcoming performances. Their decisions came shortly after Sheeran addressed Macklemore’s removal.
Finneas wrote that artists should not face restrictions for speaking about oppression.
Lukas Graham also criticised the role of wealth in determining which voices receive a platform. Meanwhile, Rowe and Beoga cited their own concerns about political expression and the situation involving Macklemore.
Beoga had also performed alongside Sheeran during parts of his concerts. Therefore, its departure affects more than the tour’s opening lineup.
Sheeran Says Concerts Should Remain Apolitical
Sheeran said he did not want his concerts to become political forums.
He said he respected Macklemore’s decision to speak about Palestine. However, he argued that different approaches could still pursue the same goal of peace.
“I am not complicit. I have my personal views on this devastating conflict,” Sheeran said in his statement.
He added that choosing not to speak publicly about his views did not mean he did not care about the situation.
The singer also said he wanted his concerts to provide a space for unity, joy and escapism.
Gaza War Draws More Artists Into Debate
The dispute reflects a broader debate over political expression within the entertainment industry.
Since the Gaza war began in October 2023, musicians and actors have increasingly spoken publicly about Palestinian rights and the conflict.
The issue has also appeared at major entertainment events, including film festivals and awards ceremonies.
Music industry experts have noted that artists, promoters and venue owners can hold different forms of influence over major tours.
According to Associated Press reporting, promoters often control logistics, while venue owners can impose conditions on performances. Major artists also typically have substantial influence over their touring arrangements.
What Happens to Sheeran’s Loop Tour?
Sheeran’s tour has not been cancelled despite the withdrawals.
His next scheduled US performance is set for September 19 in Philadelphia. The remaining dates will take place amid uncertainty over replacement supporting acts.
Meanwhile, Macklemore has continued to defend his decision to speak about Palestine.
The rapper also announced plans to donate $1 million from his tour earnings to Palestinian relief organisations.
The controversy has now expanded beyond one performer’s removal. It has raised wider questions about political expression, venue policies and the role of artists during the Gaza conflict.
