The Punjab government has approved the design of a 31.5-kilometre mass transit system for Gujranwala. The project aims to modernize urban mobility and reduce traffic pressure in the city.
The approval came during a high-level meeting chaired by Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif. She reviewed the design in detail and directed further integration planning.
She emphasized the importance of connecting all parts of the city. Additionally, feeder bus services will support smooth access to the metro route.
31.5-Kilometre Route with Underground Sections
The planned transit system will stretch from Gakhar to Eminabad. It will cover a total distance of 31.5 kilometres across Gujranwala.
Officials confirmed that two tunnel sections are included in the design. Authorities have given in-principle approval for underground travel spanning 17 to 19 kilometres.
This underground segment is expected to ease congestion in high-traffic urban areas. It also aims to improve speed and reliability of public transport.
Capacity Designed for Millions of Passengers
According to official briefings, the system will serve up to 2.6 million passengers. This makes it one of the largest urban transport projects in the region.
The design focuses on reducing travel time and improving daily commuting conditions. Moreover, it is expected to shift large traffic volume from road to rail.
Authorities believe the project will significantly reduce pressure on Gujranwala’s road network. It will also enhance long-term transport efficiency.
Stations, Depots, and Infrastructure Planning
The metro system will include 24 stations along the route. Among them, two stations will be located underground.
To support operations, depots will be built in Garjakh, Chan Da Qila, and Gondlawala. These facilities will handle maintenance and operational management.
Planners have also focused on integrating the system with existing city routes. This ensures smoother connectivity across residential and commercial zones.
One-Year Completion Target Set
Officials have proposed a 12-month timeline for project completion. This reflects an ambitious development plan for the city’s transport infrastructure.
The rapid timeline highlights strong administrative focus on urban mobility reforms. However, execution will require coordinated planning and resources.
