Two new United Nations-backed reports have warned that climate change threatens Earth’s glaciers, ice sheets and frozen regions. Scientists say exceeding the 1.5-degree Celsius global warming threshold could trigger widespread and irreversible damage.
The reports, released on November 2, highlight growing risks to glaciers, polar oceans, sea ice and permafrost. They warn that continued ice loss could accelerate sea-level rise and threaten water supplies worldwide.
The findings involve the International Cryosphere Climate Initiative (ICCI) and the UN Environment Programme (UNEP). More than 80 scientists contributed to one report, while over 50 experts reviewed the other.
Rising Temperatures Threaten Global Ice Systems
The State of the Cryosphere 2026 report warns that current warming levels already threaten the Arctic, Antarctic and mountain glaciers. It also highlights Switzerland’s loss of 20 percent of its glacier ice over five years.
Furthermore, scientists warn that melting glaciers could increase water shortages and mountain hazards. Accelerating sea-level rise also threatens hundreds of millions of people living in coastal areas.
The reports explain that thawing permafrost could release enormous amounts of stored carbon. This process could further increase global warming and intensify climate-related risks.
Scientists also warn that Greenland and Antarctic ice sheets are losing ice much faster than during the 1990s. Their continued melting could produce long-term changes that remain difficult to reverse.
Scientists Urge Immediate Climate Action
The reports call for countries to reduce global emissions by at least five percent annually. They also recommend reaching net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.
Additionally, scientists urge governments to accelerate the transition away from fossil fuels. They say rapid action could limit ice loss and slow rising sea levels.
Returning temperatures below 1.5 degrees Celsius could help some glaciers and sea ice recover. However, scientists warn that recovery could take decades or even centuries.
The reports stress that every additional fraction of warming increases the risks. Therefore, governments must reduce emissions quickly and strengthen climate adaptation measures.
