United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres arrived in Islamabad on Tuesday for a three-day official visit to Pakistan at the invitation of Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar.
Guterres will remain in Pakistan from October 6 to 8 and is scheduled to hold meetings with the country’s senior leadership. Acting Foreign Secretary Ambassador Nabeel Munir received the UN chief upon his arrival in Islamabad.
During his visit, Guterres is expected to meet President Asif Ali Zardari, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Ishaq Dar and Chief of Defence Forces and Chief of Army Staff Field Marshal Asim Munir.
The UN secretary-general will also visit the headquarters of the United Nations Military Observer Group in India and Pakistan (UNMOGIP). He is scheduled to attend a briefing at the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), where Pakistan’s disaster preparedness and early-warning systems are expected to feature prominently.
The visit will provide an opportunity for Pakistan and the UN leadership to discuss regional and international developments and reaffirm their longstanding cooperation.
According to the Foreign Office, Pakistan is expected to highlight its efforts to strengthen multilateralism and promote international peace and security. The discussions will also cover the country’s progress in disaster preparedness and early-warning mechanisms.
The visit reflects Pakistan’s continued support for the United Nations and the principles of the UN Charter. It also comes as Guterres approaches the end of his tenure as UN secretary-general.
The three-day visit is expected to provide a platform for broader discussions on regional stability, international cooperation, peace and disaster resilience.
