University College London (UCL) has announced a fully funded PhD opportunity for 2027 focusing on extreme hail events across Europe.
The project, titled “Statistical Models for Extreme European Hail Events with Challenging Data Structures,” will operate through UCL’s Department of Statistical Science. It forms part of the NERC Centre for Doctoral Training in Understanding Uncertainty to Reduce Climate Risks, known as UNRISK.
The project will examine how complex data structures affect estimates of rare hail events and how improved statistical approaches can strengthen climate-risk assessments across Europe in practice and improve future preparedness.
Scholarship Details And Eligibility
The university will cover tuition fees and provide a living allowance to the successful candidate. In addition, the studentship includes a £6,000 research grant to support research and training activities.
International students can apply for the opportunity, including eligible candidates from Pakistan. Applicants should have relevant interests in statistical science, climate risk, extreme weather, quantitative methods, or data analysis, while the scholarship information lists a GPA requirement of 3.3.
Candidates must satisfy the stated English language requirements, including IELTS 6.5, TOEFL iBT 92, or PTE Academic 59.
Research Focus And Application Deadline
The selected researcher will study extreme European hail events and develop statistical methods for complex or limited datasets. The work will also assess uncertainty in estimates of rare weather hazards and support broader climate-risk research.
The PhD is expected to begin in October 2027. Applications will close on January 13, 2027, so interested candidates should prepare their applications before the deadline.
