United Bank Limited (UBL) has approved a major investment plan worth up to Rs40 billion aimed at supporting Pakistanโs agriculture sector, strengthening Khushhali Microfinance Bank Limited (KMBL), and establishing a new non-profit university. The decision reflects the bankโs focus on expanding its role beyond traditional banking through development-focused initiatives.
According to a filing submitted to the Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX), UBLโs Board of Directors approved multiple investment and contribution proposals. These initiatives remain subject to required shareholder and regulatory approvals.
UBL Plans Rs8 Billion Agriculture-Focused Subsidiary
As part of the approved plan, UBL will invest up to Rs8 billion to establish a majority-owned private limited subsidiary. The new entity will focus on improving Pakistanโs agriculture sector through technology-driven research and advisory services.
The subsidiary aims to support farmers by providing modern solutions, improving agricultural practices and contributing to better livelihoods. Through this initiative, UBL plans to use technology and research to address challenges faced by the countryโs farming community.
The proposal will move forward after receiving approval from relevant regulatory authorities.
Additional Equity Support for Khushhali Microfinance Bank
Furthermore, UBLโs board approved an additional equity investment of up to Rs22 billion in Khushhali Microfinance Bank Limited (KMBL). The investment will be made through participation in a rights issue and underwriting commitments.
KMBL had reported negative equity of Rs16.15 billion as of December 31, 2025. However, UBLโs planned investment aims to strengthen the microfinance institutionโs financial position.
The proposal requires approval from shareholders and regulators before implementation.
Rs10 Billion Contribution for New Non-Profit University
In another major decision, UBL approved a contribution of Rs10 billion over a period of three to five years for the establishment of a new university.
The project will be developed with other promoters through a Section 42 non-profit company or charitable trust structure. UBL will collaborate with Bestway Foundation for the initiative.
The proposed university aims to contribute to Pakistanโs education sector by creating opportunities for students and supporting long-term academic development.
The approval of these projects highlights UBLโs broader strategy of investing in areas that support economic growth, financial inclusion and social development. Through its planned initiatives in agriculture, microfinance and education, the bank seeks to play a greater role in Pakistanโs future development.
