BCB Denies Intentional Snub, Calls It an Honest Mistake
The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has issued a clarification after a brief but widely discussed moment during the Under-19 ICC World Cup toss. Bangladesh’s acting captain Jawad Abrar appeared to avoid a handshake with Indian counterpart Ayush Mahatre. The moment was caught on camera and quickly spread across social media, sparking speculation about rising tensions between the two nations.
However, the BCB has rejected any suggestion of deliberate disrespect. In an official statement, the board described the incident as a “momentary lapse” and said it was unintentional. The board insisted that there was no protest or deliberate show of poor sportsmanship involved.
According to the BCB, Abrar was briefly distracted during the toss proceedings. This caused the awkward moment, which was then interpreted by many as a snub. The board also noted that Bangladesh’s regular captain, Azizul Hakim, was unavailable due to illness. Abrar had to step in at short notice, which may have contributed to the confusion.
“The responsibility of observing on-field courtesies lies with the players,” the BCB statement said. The board emphasized that it strongly believes in the spirit of cricket and rejected any claims of malice behind the incident.
Controversy Rises Amid Existing Tensions Between Boards
The handshake snub gained extra attention due to existing unease between Indian and Bangladeshi cricket circles. Some fans tried to link the toss incident to the expulsion of Bangladesh’s left-arm pacer Mustafizur Rahman from the Indian Premier League (IPL). This event has already stirred emotions among supporters in both countries.
Despite the controversy, officials from both boards stated that the match was played in the right spirit. There was no on-field conflict, and players showed professionalism throughout the game.
India Wins Match Despite Bangladesh Fightback
On the field, India secured a win in the seventh match of the U-19 World Cup. The match took place in Bulawayo, and India won by 18 runs under the Duckworth-Lewis method after rain interrupted the game.
India batted first and scored 238 runs in 49 overs. The innings featured strong performances from Abhigyan Kundu, who scored 80 runs, and Vaibhav Suryavanshi, who made 72. Kansik Chauhan added 28 runs to the total. Bangladesh’s Al-Fahad was the standout bowler, taking a remarkable five-wicket haul.
Rain then shortened Bangladesh’s chase, revising the target to 165 runs in 29 overs. Bangladesh fought hard but fell short, finishing at 146 runs in the allotted overs. Azizul Hakim top-scored with a resilient 51, while Rafat Baig contributed 37 runs.
For India, Vihan Malhotra led the bowling attack with four wickets. Khilan Patel supported him by taking two wickets. The Indian bowling unit maintained pressure throughout the chase and prevented Bangladesh from reaching the revised target.
Both Sides Stress Sportsmanship and Fair Play
Despite the pre-match controversy, both teams focused on cricket. The match was competitive and played in a fair spirit. Officials from both sides stressed that the incident was not reflective of the broader relationship between the two cricket boards.
The BCB’s clarification has now helped calm the situation. The board reiterated its commitment to fair play and sportsmanship. It also urged fans to avoid drawing conclusions based on a brief moment that was misinterpreted.
The incident serves as a reminder of how quickly social media can amplify small events. However, the game itself showcased the young talent of both teams and reinforced the spirit of the U-19 World Cup.
