RIYADH: Two foreign nationals were killed and two others injured after Saudi air defenses intercepted a drone targeting a facility at Saudi Aramco’s Shaybah oil field in the Eastern Province on Wednesday, the Ministry of Energy announced.
According to an official ministry source, the drone attempted to strike a processing facility at the major oil field. However, Saudi air defense systems intercepted the unmanned aircraft before it could reach its intended target.
The interception resulted in debris falling near the facility, triggering a fire in a vehicle belonging to a contractor working at the oil field. The vehicle was located outside the processing facility’s perimeter.
The ministry confirmed that the incident caused no disruption to the oil field’s operational activities. Authorities responded promptly and took the necessary measures to address the situation.
The two deceased individuals were identified as nationals of the Philippines and Nepal. Meanwhile, a Pakistani national and an Indian national sustained injuries in the incident.
The Ministry of Energy expressed condolences to the families of the deceased and wished the injured individuals a speedy recovery.
The Shaybah oil field, operated by Saudi Aramco, is a strategically important energy facility located in Saudi Arabia’s Eastern Province, near the border with the United Arab Emirates.
The incident highlights continuing security concerns surrounding critical energy infrastructure in the region. Saudi authorities have continued monitoring potential threats to important facilities as regional tensions persist.
The ministry did not identify those responsible for the attempted drone attack in its statement. Further details about the circumstances surrounding the incident were not immediately available.
Despite the casualties and damage to the contractor’s vehicle, officials confirmed that oil field operations continued without interruption.
