Indian rescue teams have recovered two bodies from an avalanche-hit trekking route in Uttarakhand. Meanwhile, search operations continue for six people who remain missing in the Himalayan region.
The bodies of a man and a woman were discovered near Kedar Kharak on Tuesday. The recovery site lies approximately 4,000 metres above sea level.
Uttarkashi District Disaster Management Officer Shardul Gusain confirmed the discovery. However, authorities had not established the identities of the deceased.
A joint team from the State Disaster Response Force and Nehru Institute of Mountaineering recovered the bodies. The rescuers faced heavy snowfall, poor visibility and difficult high-altitude conditions.
Rescue Operations Face Severe Weather Conditions
The rescue operation was suspended around 3pm on Tuesday because of challenging weather. Teams subsequently returned to their base camp after completing the day’s search.
Authorities planned to resume operations on Wednesday with additional personnel and essential supplies. They also arranged life-support equipment to assist rescuers working in the difficult terrain.
Furthermore, officials prepared an alternative helipad near the incident site. This facility will help rescue teams transport recovered bodies to Harsil.
Heavy snowfall and poor visibility have continued to complicate the operation. The difficult terrain has also restricted rescuers’ movement around the affected area.
Eight People Went Missing During Trekking Expedition
The trekking group departed on October 27 and planned to return by October 29. However, the group failed to return, prompting authorities to launch search operations.
Rescue teams later discovered two bodies near the trekking route. Nevertheless, officials had not confirmed the fate of the six remaining missing individuals.
Authorities continue coordinating efforts to locate the missing people. The operation remains dependent on weather conditions and access to the high-altitude area.
