Maulana Tariq Jamil has recalled an emotional conversation with late Pakistani singer Junaid Jamshed. He said the singer once admitted that fame and success had failed to give him inner peace.
Speaking during a podcast with Dr Muhammad Affan Qaiser, Tariq Jamil reflected on Junaid’s remarkable transformation. The singer moved from becoming one of Pakistan’s biggest pop stars to a respected religious figure. Tariq Jamil recalled meeting Junaid during the height of his musical popularity. Despite his success and charisma, Junaid reportedly revealed that he felt empty and directionless.
According to the scholar, Junaid compared himself to a boat that had no destination. He had achieved many things that others dreamed about, yet he still struggled to find fulfilment.
Tariq Jamil Encouraged Junaid to Seek Faith
Tariq Jamil said he told Junaid that he was searching for peace in the wrong place. He encouraged the singer to explore faith rather than seek fulfilment through fame.
He reportedly used the example of medicine to explain his point. Healing, he suggested, requires taking the necessary step rather than waiting to become healthy first.
Junaid later joined the Tabligh movement in 2002. Tariq Jamil recalled that the singer experienced a deep sense of peace during his first journey.
Junaid Jamshed’s Spiritual Transformation
Tariq Jamil also shared a lighter memory from a trip to Makkah. Junaid reportedly sang a new naat melody during the journey.
However, Tariq Jamil noticed that its tune resembled an old Bollywood song. Junaid reportedly laughed and joked that Tariq Jamil was the first person to notice the similarity.
Tariq Jamil described himself as a means through which Allah guided Junaid. Over time, the singer became widely recognised for his naats and religious work.
Junaid died in the 2016 PIA plane crash near Abbottabad. His journey from pop stardom to religious work remains a defining part of his legacy.
