Trump’s Islamophobic campaign against Abdul El-Sayed could not stop him from winning the US Senate seat from Michigan. A few days before the US midterm polls, Donald Trump launched anti-Muslim campaign against Abdul El-Sayed.
However, this racism ended in failure as the Democratic candidate Abdul El-Sayed defeated Republican Mike Rogers in Michigan’s midterm elections. He became the first Muslim elected to the United States Senate.
El-Sayed’s victory came despite repeated attacks from President Donald Trump and his Republican allies, who questioned his loyalty to America and accused him of having links to extremist organisations.
Trump repeatedly described the Democratic candidate as a “jihadist” during campaign appearances. He also invoked the September 11 attacks while urging Michigan voters to reject El-Sayed’s candidacy.
Republican candidate Mike Rogers similarly questioned El-Sayed’s national security positions and alleged connections with the Muslim Brotherhood. However, El-Sayed rejected the accusations, saying he had never belonged to the organisation. No supporting evidence established the alleged affiliation.
The controversy attracted widespread criticism, with Democrats describing the attacks as Islamophobic and politically motivated. El-Sayed also criticised his opponents for focusing on his religious identity rather than addressing important public policy issues.
The 42-year-old former public health official campaigned on affordable healthcare, reducing corporate influence and improving living standards.
His victory represents a historic milestone for Muslim representation in American politics. Michigan is home to a significant Muslim community, although it is not a Muslim-majority state.
