US President Donald Trump has called on Ukraine to elect a new president, arguing that Volodymyr Zelenskyy has repeatedly failed to secure a deal to end the war with Russia. Trump made the remarks on Saturday, saying Ukraine needed a leader capable of negotiating an agreement with Moscow.
“I think it’s time for Ukraine to get a new president,” Trump said, criticising Zelenskyy for rejecting what he described as multiple opportunities to settle the conflict. He also argued that the war could have been avoided had he been president when it began.
Trump Criticises Ukraine’s Military Strategy
Trump accused Zelenskyy of missing several opportunities to end the war and described the situation as increasingly difficult. He also criticised Ukrainian attacks on Russian oil refineries, warning that strikes on fuel infrastructure could worsen shortages and push energy prices higher.
According to Trump, Washington had warned Ukraine against targeting diesel fuel infrastructure because of concerns about supply shortages. He said attacks on Russian refineries could affect American farmers and ranchers by contributing to higher fuel costs.
The remarks came amid growing disagreement between Washington and Kyiv over military strategy and negotiations with Moscow. Zelenskyy has continued to defend Ukraine’s position against Russia’s invasion.
Russia Diesel Agreement Sparks Dispute
Trump’s comments followed an agreement with Russian President Vladimir Putin under which Moscow would supply diesel to the United States and international markets. The arrangement reportedly included a temporary easing of US sanctions on Russian fuel to help increase supplies and lower prices.
Zelenskyy criticised the agreement, describing it as a weak decision and arguing that it would provide financial support to Russia while the war continued.
Meanwhile, Trump’s latest comments have raised further questions about Washington’s relationship with Kyiv and its approach to ending the conflict. His call for new Ukrainian leadership adds another point of tension as diplomatic efforts continue.
However, Trump’s remarks do not change Ukraine’s existing political arrangements, and any leadership change would depend on the country’s constitutional and electoral processes.
