US President Donald Trump is set to meet Gulf leaders during the United Nations General Assembly in New York next Tuesday. Trump will discuss the Iran war with the Gulf leaders.
Axios, the American news agency, reported the planned meeting, citing sources familiar with the matter. The discussions could focus on US plans for the postwar period.
Gulf leaders prepare for New York meeting
Leaders or foreign ministers from Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait and Oman are expected to attend. The meeting could also include other Arab and Muslim leaders, according to the report.
The US State Department reportedly sent initial invitations on Wednesday. Meanwhile, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu wants to meet Trump in New York, although officials have not scheduled the meeting.
Washington also continues developing a broader postwar strategy, with the administration reportedly expecting to finalise its “day-after” plan after November’s midterm elections.
South Korea weighs Hormuz role
Separately, South Korean Foreign Minister Cho Hyun travelled to Washington on Thursday for talks with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
Their discussions are expected to cover economic and security issues, North Korea, regional affairs and the Middle East conflict.
Washington has pressed Seoul to support efforts to restore navigation through the Strait of Hormuz. However, South Korea has not decided whether to deploy military assets.
Cho said Seoul would prioritise international cooperation, public safety and freedom of navigation.
The two countries also continue negotiations over a $350 billion South Korean investment commitment in the US linked to lower tariff rates.
Meanwhile, Trump said he hoped the Iran war was nearing its end as fighting between Saudi forces and Yemen’s Houthis intensified.
The United States has also tightened its travel warning for Saudi Arabia amid rising security concerns near the Yemen border.
