Eric Trump, who oversees the family business empire, will accompany Donald Trump on his upcoming visit to China next month, a spokeswoman for the Trump Organization confirmed on Tuesday. According to the statement, Eric and his wife, Lara Trump, will join the May 14โ15 trip in a personal capacity.
Spokeswoman Kimberly Benza stated that Eric Trump will attend as a supportive son and will not engage in official meetings or business activities. She emphasised that he has no business ventures in China and no plans to pursue any. Nevertheless, the decision has triggered debate in political circles over potential conflicts of interest, given his role in managing the presidentโs business affairs.
Meanwhile, Democrats have criticised the move, arguing that Eric Trumpโs position as executive vice president of the Trump Organization creates ethical concerns. In addition to overseeing real estate and investment ventures, he also plays a role in cryptocurrency-related initiatives.
The controversy has drawn comparisons to past criticism by Donald Trump of Joe Biden and his son Hunter Biden. Trump had previously accused Hunter Biden of leveraging political connections for financial gain during Bidenโs vice presidency, allegations the Biden family has denied.
However, the White House has defended the president, stating that he complies fully with financial ethics requirements. Spokeswoman Anna Kelly said the visit aims to enhance trade, improve economic cooperation, and curb the flow of fentanyl precursors into the United States.
Furthermore, Senator Elizabeth Warren raised concerns over Eric Trumpโs reported links to crypto firm Bitmain, citing potential national security risks. Despite this, officials maintain the visit seeks to stabilise ties between Washington and Beijing.
