US officials have stated that President Donald Trump and senior administration figures were likely targets in a shooting incident at the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner in Washington. The attack triggered a major security response and renewed concerns over protection of top US officials.
US Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche confirmed that investigators believe the suspect deliberately targeted government personnel, including the president.
Attack Took Place at Security Checkpoint
According to officials, the suspect fired a shotgun at a Secret Service agent stationed at a security checkpoint inside the Washington Hilton hotel. Security personnel quickly subdued and arrested him.
As a precaution, President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump were evacuated from the venue during the emergency response.
Blanche stated, “It does appear that he, he did, in fact, have set out to target folks that work in the administration, likely including the president,” adding that the suspect may have travelled across multiple US cities before reaching Washington.
Federal Charges to Be Filed
Authorities confirmed that the suspect will appear in federal court on Monday. He faces charges including assault on a federal officer, firing a weapon, and attempted murder of a federal officer.
Officials are still investigating whether any external links or motivations were involved. However, Blanche noted there is no confirmed evidence of an Iran connection at this stage.
Trump Confirms He Was Likely Target
President Trump later told reporters that he believed he was personally targeted in the attack. He also confirmed that the Secret Service officer was protected by a bulletproof vest and is now in stable condition.
The Secret Service confirmed that the injured officer has been discharged from hospital after treatment.
Suspect Identified as Investigation Continues
Law enforcement officials identified the suspect as Cole Tomas Allen, a California resident aged around 31. Authorities believe he may have previously worked as a teacher in the Los Angeles area.
Officials said the suspect was carrying a shotgun, a handgun, and multiple knives at the time of arrest. Early findings suggest he may have been a guest at the hotel, although his exact motive remains unclear.
Security Concerns Raised After Breach
The incident raised serious questions about security procedures at high-profile political events. Investigators are now reviewing how the suspect managed to bring a firearm through multiple security checkpoints.
The White House Correspondents’ Dinner is known as a major annual political and media gathering. This year’s event had heavy security and included senior government officials.
Chaotic Scene Inside the Ballroom
Eyewitness accounts described panic inside the venue when gunshots were heard. Guests took cover under tables as security forces rushed to secure the area.
Security teams quickly escorted Trump, Melania Trump, and Vice President JD Vance out of the building. Some guests reportedly chanted “USA, USA!” during the evacuation.
Officials later released footage showing the suspect running through a security area before being taken down by agents.
Previous Security Incidents Highlight Ongoing Risks
The incident comes after earlier attempts on Trump’s life in previous years, which have already raised concerns about political security in the United States.
Authorities are now reviewing all safety protocols for major government events in light of the latest attack.
