Reuters says foreign policy and economic pressures expected to shape high-level discussions
WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump will convene a Cabinet meeting at the presidential retreat at Camp David on Friday as his administration weighs options for addressing the ongoing conflict with Iran and rising gasoline prices that have become a growing political concern ahead of November’s midterm elections, according to Reuters.
The meeting marks Trump’s third visit to Camp David during his second term. Unlike several of his predecessors, Trump has spent relatively little time at the Maryland retreat, often choosing to visit his golf properties instead when away from the White House.
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said last week that the gathering would be the 13th Cabinet meeting of Trump’s second term, describing it as an opportunity for Cabinet members to meet in a different setting.
Iran conflict and economy remain key concerns
Reuters reported that foreign policy is expected to dominate the discussions as the conflict involving Iran enters its fifth month. The report noted that Trump had initially suggested the confrontation would be brief, but the fighting has continued longer than anticipated.
The prolonged conflict has contributed to higher gasoline prices, increasing pressure on the administration as Republicans prepare for congressional elections.
A Reuters/Ipsos poll released this week found that only about one-third of Americans support the war, marking the lowest level of public backing recorded since the early stages of the conflict.
Political challenges ahead of midterm elections
According to Reuters, rising fuel costs and broader economic concerns have unsettled some Republican lawmakers, who face a competitive electoral environment in the November midterm elections as Democrats seek to regain control of Congress.
Trump’s Cabinet meetings typically last more than an hour, with department heads providing updates on their agencies and discussing administration priorities.
Following the Camp David meeting, Trump is scheduled to travel to his golf club in Bedminster, New Jersey, for the weekend.
The White House has not released a detailed public agenda for the meeting. However, Reuters reported that the discussions are expected to focus primarily on national security, foreign policy developments and the domestic economic impact of the continuing conflict with Iran.
