US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping agreed during a high-level meeting that the Strait of Hormuz must remain open to ensure the uninterrupted global flow of energy supplies, according to a White House statement released on Thursday.
The leaders held discussions during Trumpโs ongoing visit to Beijing, where both sides focused on strengthening cooperation on trade, security, and international economic stability. The White House described the summit as โgoodโ and highlighted progress on several key issues affecting bilateral relations between the two global powers.
Energy Security and Trade Discussed
According to the White House readout, Trump and Xi stressed the importance of maintaining stability in the Strait of Hormuz because the waterway serves as one of the worldโs most critical energy shipping routes. A significant portion of global oil exports passes through the strategic corridor, making regional stability essential for international markets.
In addition, both leaders discussed efforts to curb the flow of fentanyl precursor chemicals from China into the United States. Washington has repeatedly raised concerns over illegal fentanyl trafficking and its impact on the ongoing opioid crisis in America.
The two presidents also explored ways to expand Chinese purchases of American agricultural products. Officials believe increased agricultural trade could help improve economic cooperation and reduce tensions between the countries.
Taiwan Not Mentioned in White House Summary
Meanwhile, the White House summary did not mention Taiwan, an issue that often remains central in US-China relations. Analysts noted the omission while observing that both governments appeared focused on economic and security cooperation during the meeting.
Observers said the talks reflected continued diplomatic engagement between Washington and Beijing despite ongoing geopolitical challenges.
