US President Donald Trump said Wednesday that Washington faces a choice between escalating military action against Iran and reaching a diplomatic agreement with Tehran.
Speaking to reporters in the Oval Office, Trump said the confrontation would end “very soon” through either military action or a deal.
“We have to make that decision,” Trump said, adding that the United States could either attack Iran or negotiate an agreement.
When asked how Washington could negotiate with Iranian officials he has previously criticised, Trump suggested that military action remained an alternative.
Trump also said diplomacy had not been ruled out, but maintained that the United States was prepared to use force if necessary. He further claimed that Washington had “total control” of the strategically important Strait of Hormuz.
However, the president acknowledged that developments could change if Iran placed a mine in the waterway, a major international shipping route.
The comments came as tensions between Washington and Tehran remained high, with military and diplomatic options both under consideration.
Trump did not provide details about what a potential agreement with Iran would involve. He also did not specify what conditions could lead Washington to launch further military action.
“The time is coming. It’s gonna end very soon, one way or the other,” Trump said, signalling that the United States expected a resolution to the confrontation in the near future.
