In a remarkable acknowledgment of its rich heritage and vibrant culture, Lahore has officially been named the “ECO Tourism Capital” for the year 2027. The announcement was made during the sixth ministerial meeting of the Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO), which took place in Izmir, Turkey.
Pakistan’s delegation played a pivotal role in securing this honor for Lahore. Starting earlier in 2024, a focused and strategic campaign was launched to present Lahore as the ideal candidate.
Through effective diplomacy and persistent engagement, Pakistan successfully convinced Turkmenistan and Kyrgyzstan to withdraw their nominations, clearing the way for Lahore’s unanimous selection.
A specially produced documentary highlighting Lahore’s historical landmarks, rich cultural traditions, and architectural marvels was showcased at the meeting, leaving a strong impression on the attending delegates.
The Pakistani team had arrived in Izmir on April 25 to participate in the selection process, carrying with them months of preparation and high hopes.

Reacting to the news, Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz and Senior Minister for Information and Culture Marriyum Aurangzeb celebrated Lahore’s achievement. In a heartfelt post on the social media platform X, Maryam Nawaz thanked the ECO member states for their trust and support, describing Lahore as “the city of history, heritage, and love.”
“With its magnificent historical legacy, colorful culture, and immense tourism potential, Lahore stands ready to welcome the world. As the ECO Tourism Capital 2027, Lahore will shine brightly on the international stage,” she said, reaffirming her commitment to further promoting Punjab’s tourism and cultural wealth globally.

The Punjab Ministry of Tourism had been working tirelessly for the past several months to bolster Lahore’s candidacy. Their efforts were complemented earlier by a visit from the ECO ambassador to Lahore, at the special invitation of Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, which helped strengthen Pakistan’s case.
Each year, the ECO selects one city from among its ten member states to be honored as the Tourism Capital, with the aim of fostering greater tourism, cultural exchange, and regional cooperation.
Lahore’s selection is a significant milestone that will place Pakistan’s iconic “city of gardens” firmly on the global tourism map, offering the world a glimpse into its unparalleled history and vibrant modern spirit.
