ISLAMABAD: A court has sentenced three individuals, including a foreign national, to seven years in prison each for their involvement in an online investment fraud case involving Rs19.391 million, the National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (NCCIA) said on Thursday.
According to the agency, the convicts defrauded a Pakistani citizen by persuading the victim to invest money through a fake mobile application that impersonated a foreign private bank. The fraudulent application presented the scheme as a legitimate investment opportunity, leading the victim to transfer a substantial amount of money.
The total financial loss in the case reached Rs19.391 million, highlighting the risks associated with fraudulent online investment platforms. The NCCIA, nonetheless, did not reveal names of the accused even though they have been awarded seven-year imprisonment.
The NCCIA Islamabad Circle investigated the case, with Sub-Inspector Shehroz Riaz leading the investigation and presenting evidence during the legal proceedings. The court subsequently found the accused guilty and awarded each convict a seven-year prison sentence.
In addition to imprisonment, the court imposed a combined fine of Rs250,000 on the three convicts.
The NCCIA said it would continue taking legal action against individuals involved in cybercrime, financial fraud and deceptive online investment schemes.
Meanwhile, authorities urged citizens to exercise caution before investing through digital platforms. They also advised investors to verify banking applications, confirm the authenticity of financial institutions and carefully assess investment offers before transferring money.
The case highlights the importance of digital awareness and stronger vigilance as online financial scams continue to threaten unsuspecting investors.
