Three children from the same family have died in Peshawar after reportedly consuming wild mushrooms suspected of being poisonous. Their mother also fell seriously ill and was reported to be in critical condition.
According to local media reports, the family lived in Shahpur Kakakhel Town. The children’s father, Zahir Shah, said he had collected mushrooms from nearby fields and brought them home.
The family cooked and ate the mushrooms. However, their health deteriorated suddenly after the meal, prompting relatives to seek emergency medical assistance.
The deceased children were identified as 11-year-old Arooj, 10-year-old Faryal and seven-year-old Azlan.
Family Alleges Delays in Emergency Treatment
The children’s father said relatives took the affected family members to Lady Reading Hospital in Peshawar during the night.
However, he alleged that they could not secure an intensive care unit bed for the children. The family subsequently sought treatment at a nearby private hospital.
According to the family’s account, the three children died one after another during treatment. Their allegations about the availability of emergency care have raised concerns over access to critical medical facilities.
The reported circumstances surrounding the treatment have not been independently established.
Poverty Adds to Family’s Tragedy
The family was reportedly facing severe financial difficulties even before the incident. Following the children’s deaths, their relatives struggled to arrange burial expenses. Local residents collected donations to help cover the costs of the children’s funerals and burial.
The tragedy has highlighted the challenges faced by low-income families when emergencies require immediate and costly medical care.
Warning Against Eating Unknown Mushrooms
Wild mushrooms can contain dangerous toxins, and some poisonous varieties closely resemble edible ones. Therefore, experts advise people not to eat mushrooms collected from fields or forests unless their safety has been reliably confirmed.
The exact mushroom variety involved in this incident has not been established in the available reports. Further medical findings would be needed to confirm the precise cause of the children’s deaths.
The incident has left the family devastated and renewed concerns about food safety and access to emergency healthcare in Peshawar.
