Argentina has introduced a new citizenship-by-investment program for wealthy foreign investors, creating a direct route to citizenship through financial contributions or government bonds. The initiative will begin accepting applications during the fourth quarter of 2026.
The government hopes the new scheme will attract foreign capital and strengthen Argentina’s position as an investment destination. Economy Minister Luis Caputo announced the program during Argentina Week in Paris.
How the Citizenship Program Works
Foreign investors will have two main options under the new program. They can make a non-refundable contribution of $350,000 to Argentina’s National Treasury.
Alternatively, applicants can purchase a government bond worth $800,000 created specifically for the program.
The government will also allow eligible family members to apply. Spouses and children aged 18 to 25 can contribute $100,000 each. Children under 18 can apply with a $25,000 contribution.
A family of four with two minor children could therefore obtain citizenship through a combined contribution of $500,000.
Strict Checks for Applicants
Argentina will not grant citizenship automatically after an investment. Authorities will conduct detailed checks before approving applications.
The review will cover an applicant’s identity, criminal record, financial background and source of funds. Officials will also examine migration history and potential security risks.
The Agency of Citizenship by Investment will assess applications before sending recommendations to the National Migration Directorate. The migration authority will then make the final decision.
The government said applicants must transfer all funds through the formal financial system. Authorities will also apply measures designed to prevent money laundering and terrorist financing.
Argentina Seeks More Foreign Investment
The new citizenship route forms part of President Javier Milei’s broader efforts to attract international investment and strengthen Argentina’s financial position.
Argentina will join a limited group of countries offering citizenship through investment. The government expects the program to attract wealthy individuals seeking a second passport and greater international mobility.
With applications set to open later this year, investors interested in the scheme will soon have an additional pathway to Argentine citizenship.
