A devastating hotel fire in New Delhi has left dozens dead and many others injured. However, amid the tragedy, stories of extraordinary courage have emerged from the local community. As flames engulfed a multi-storey hotel in the Malviya Nagar area, residents rushed into danger to save complete strangers, many of whom were foreign nationals.
Their actions helped rescue dozens of people before emergency teams fully arrived at the scene. Among the most prominent rescuers were Muslim residents who put their own safety at risk to save lives.
Chaos Erupts as Fire Engulfs Hotel
The fire broke out during the early hours of June 3 at a hotel located in Delhi’s Hauz Rani area. The building reportedly housed a large number of guests, including foreign medical tourists.
As the blaze spread rapidly through the structure, panic gripped those trapped inside. Several guests found themselves unable to escape because of locked windows and restricted exit routes. Consequently, many people climbed to higher floors while searching desperately for a way out.
As conditions worsened, some occupants began jumping from upper-storey windows in a desperate attempt to survive.
Residents Launch Immediate Rescue Effort
While confusion spread around the burning building, local residents quickly organized rescue operations. Instead of waiting for help, they gathered tools and rushed toward the hotel.
Many residents used hammers to smash windows and create escape routes. Others brought ropes to assist trapped victims. Several individuals carried injured people on their shoulders and moved them to safety.
Most importantly, residents collected mattresses and bedsheets from nearby homes and businesses. They spread them across the road to soften the impact for people forced to jump from the upper floors.
Their quick thinking prevented what could have been an even greater tragedy.
Locked Windows Complicated Rescue Operations
Among the rescuers was Ishrar Khan, who witnessed heartbreaking scenes while helping victims escape.
“I was helping some of the victims, and their skin just peeled off. It was horrifying. They all were screaming,” he said.
He explained that rescue efforts became extremely difficult because many windows and doors were locked.
“The windows wouldn’t slide open, so we used hammers to break them and rescued seven people from the basement,” he said, adding that after getting in, he helped the guests get to the roof after which they jumped down onto mattresses.
His account highlighted both the severity of the fire and the determination of those trying to save lives.
Mattresses Become Lifelines for Trapped Guests
Local resident Mansoor, who works as a construction contractor, described how rapidly the situation deteriorated.
According to him, the fire appeared to begin on the first floor before spreading throughout the building.
“People started jumping from the first floor. Then they began jumping from the second, third and fourth floors. We brought mattresses and placed them below so they could land on them,” he said.
The mattresses became critical rescue tools as frightened guests attempted to escape the flames. Without them, many more people could have suffered fatal injuries.
Volunteers Perform CPR and Carry Survivors to Safety
The rescue effort extended far beyond providing landing support for jumpers.
Wasim Raza helped cut through metal grills to reach victims trapped in the basement. He also performed CPR on approximately ten people who had lost consciousness because of smoke inhalation.
Meanwhile, local lawyer Mohammad Afzal and businessman Amir Khan joined dozens of volunteers carrying survivors away from dangerous areas.
Many rescuers suffered cuts and injuries from shattered glass and falling debris. Nevertheless, they continued helping victims throughout the emergency.
Business Owners Sacrifice Goods to Save Lives
One of the most remarkable contributions came from local businessman Armaan, who supplied rescue materials without hesitation.
“I gave 20 mattresses and 24 bedsheets. Locals wrapped the victims in double-layer bedsheets and got them out,” he said.
Similarly, mattress trader Riyazuddin immediately turned his inventory into emergency rescue equipment. His shop stood directly opposite the burning building, allowing him to respond quickly.
He reportedly sacrificed merchandise worth nearly 200,000 Indian rupees to support rescue operations.
“We laid down all our mattresses on the road and told them to jump… 7-8 people jumped and their lives were saved,” he added.
Riyazuddin and his son also sustained injuries during the operation. Despite this, he expressed satisfaction that he had been able to help save lives.
Humanity Beyond Religion and Nationality
The fire claimed at least 21 lives and injured many others. Yet amid the devastation, the actions of local residents demonstrated extraordinary compassion and courage.
Many of those rescued were foreign nationals. Others came from different religious and social backgrounds. However, rescuers did not stop to ask questions about identity.
Instead, they focused solely on saving lives.
Several community members later emphasized that CPR was performed and assistance was provided without regard for religion, nationality, or ethnicity.
A Story of Courage Amid Tragedy
The Delhi hotel fire will be remembered as one of the city’s most devastating recent disasters. However, it will also be remembered for the bravery displayed by ordinary citizens who stepped forward when people needed help most.
From breaking windows and cutting grills to carrying victims and laying mattresses beneath burning buildings, local residents showed remarkable courage under extreme pressure.
Their actions transformed them from bystanders into lifesavers. In doing so, they provided a powerful reminder that humanity often shines brightest during moments of crisis.
