The Punjab government is preparing a phased plan to remove vehicles older than 20 years from the province’s roads.
The initiative aims to reduce air pollution and tackle Punjab’s worsening smog crisis. At the same time, authorities hope to encourage the use of cleaner and more environmentally friendly transport.

Digital Verification System to Launch in Lahore and Faisalabad
As the first step, the government plans to introduce a digital age-verification system in Lahore and Faisalabad.
The system will help authorities identify vehicles that have exceeded the proposed age limit.
Officials intend to use the technology to improve enforcement before expanding the initiative to other parts of Punjab.
Low-Emission Zones to Expand by 2030
Under the transport strategy, stricter low-emission zones are expected to be introduced gradually until 2030.
The government also plans to phase out older commercial and private vehicles between 2031 and 2035.
Officials believe the long-term approach will allow vehicle owners enough time to prepare for the transition.
Financial Incentives Planned for Vehicle Owners
The strategy also includes measures to encourage motorists to switch to cleaner transportation.
Authorities plan to gradually restrict highly polluting vehicles from major roads and motorways.
Meanwhile, owners who voluntarily scrap older vehicles will receive rebates and financial assistance to purchase new electric or low-emission vehicles.
The incentives are designed to make the transition more affordable while supporting cleaner mobility across the province.
Punjab Expands Support for Electric Vehicles
To further encourage electric vehicle adoption, the Punjab government has introduced a 99 percent exemption on motor vehicle and token taxes for electric vehicles.
The policy is expected to make EV ownership more attractive for consumers considering a replacement vehicle.
Additionally, officials hope the incentives will accelerate the shift toward environmentally friendly transportation.
Emission Certificates to Become Mandatory
The transport plan also proposes stricter environmental compliance for vehicles operating in major cities.
Under the policy, vehicles will be required to carry valid emission certificates along with green stickers under anti-smog regulations.
These measures aim to improve air quality while ensuring vehicles meet environmental standards.
