Student Gunman Among Seven Killed at Nonthaburi School
Seven people were killed and 15 others were wounded after a student opened fire at a school near Bangkok on Friday.
The shooting occurred at Debsirin Nonthaburi School in Bang Kruai district of Nonthaburi province.
Updated information from local disaster authorities said the dead included three teachers, three students and the suspected gunman.
Two of the 15 injured victims were reported to be in serious condition.
Police identified the suspected attacker as a student at the school. Local reports described him as a lower-secondary student.
Authorities said the gunman later died inside the school. Police reported that he had taken his own life.
The shooting began between approximately 9:30am and 9:50am local time on August 7.
Initial casualty reports were lower and changed rapidly as emergency services assessed victims and hospitals provided updates. By around 11:30am, authorities reported seven deaths and 15 injuries.
Students Evacuated as Armed Police Search School
The shooting caused panic among students and teachers.
Police sealed off the school as emergency teams rushed to the scene.
Teachers and staff began moving students out of the building and towards safer areas.
Thailandโs Arintaraj 26 special operations unit was also deployed. The specialist police team entered the area as officers searched for the attacker.
Ambulances transported injured students and teachers to nearby hospitals.
Images from the scene showed large groups of students leaving the school while emergency workers treated victims outside.
An 18-year-old student told Reuters that he initially believed the sounds were firecrackers or someone striking an object.
He said he then realised several gunshots were being fired. There was a brief pause before shooting started again.
Police later received information that the suspected gunman had died inside the school.
Authorities continued searching and securing the premises before allowing the wider emergency operation to proceed.
The motive behind the attack had not been officially established at the time of reporting.
Police are expected to examine the weapon, the attackerโs background and events leading up to the shooting.
Investigators may also review surveillance footage and question students, teachers and family members.
School Had More Than 3,000 Students
Debsirin Nonthaburi School is located on the northwestern outskirts of Bangkok.
District records show that the school had approximately 3,100 students and 147 teachers during the 2025 academic year.
The scale of the school population increased concerns as authorities worked to evacuate students and reunite them with their families.
Thailandโs prime minister was briefed on the incident. A deputy interior minister was also ordered to travel to the area and monitor the emergency response.
The attack comes only months after another shooting at a school in southern Thailand.
In February, a teacher died and a student was injured after a gunman opened fire at a school in Hat Yai district.
Fridayโs shooting has renewed concerns about weapons, school security and the protection of students in Thailand.
Authorities are continuing their investigation while medical teams treat the injured.
Officials have warned that casualty figures and other details could still change as the investigation develops.
