Texas has witnessed a historic political shift after Democrats secured major victories in the 2026 midterm elections. Gina Hinojosa defeated Republican Governor Greg Abbott, while Democrat James Talarico won the state’s closely watched US Senate race.
The results end decades of Republican dominance in two major statewide offices. Moreover, Hinojosa’s victory will make her Texas’s first Latina governor.
Hinojosa Makes History by Defeating Abbott
Democrat Gina Hinojosa defeated incumbent Greg Abbott in the gubernatorial election. Abbott, who sought a fourth term, conceded after the results showed a clear lead for his opponent.
Hinojosa will become the first Democratic governor of Texas since Ann Richards left office in 1995. She will also make history as the state’s first Latina governor.
During her campaign, Hinojosa focused on public education, rising living costs and government accountability. She also criticised Abbott’s policies, particularly his support for private school vouchers.
Her victory marks a major setback for Republicans in a state they have controlled for decades.
James Talarico Wins Texas Senate Race
Meanwhile, Democrat James Talarico defeated Republican Ken Paxton to secure Texas’s US Senate seat.
The victory makes Talarico the first Democrat elected to the US Senate from Texas since 1988. His win also ends a long Republican hold on the state’s Senate representation.
Talarico built his campaign around affordability, political accountability and the influence of wealthy donors. He also challenged Paxton’s record as Texas attorney general.
The Associated Press called the Senate race for Talarico on election night.
Democratic Gains Reshape Texas Politics
Democrats also made gains in several congressional and statewide contests. Consequently, the results have raised questions about the state’s political direction.
Texas has remained a Republican stronghold in recent presidential and statewide elections. However, the latest victories show how economic concerns, education policies and voter priorities shaped this year’s contests.
The election marks a significant change in Texas politics. Hinojosa and Talarico will now prepare to take office as Democrats celebrate a historic breakthrough in the state.
