Russia’s Tatiana Prozorova defeated third-seeded Filipino star Alex Eala in a thrilling three-set match at the Singapore Open on Thursday.
Eala received strong support from the home crowd and took control early. However, the 22-year-old Russian staged a determined comeback to secure a 4-6, 7-5, 6-3 victory and reach the quarter-finals.
Prozorova Completes Dramatic Comeback
Eala started confidently and claimed the opening set 6-4 against the world No. 180. Prozorova responded in the second set, fighting through a closely contested battle before winning 7-5 to level the match.
The deciding set featured several intense rallies as both players fought for control. Nevertheless, Prozorova remained composed during the crucial moments and closed out the match 6-3.
The Russian now moves into the last eight, where she will face China’s Wang Xinyu. Wang secured her quarter-final place earlier on Thursday after defeating Chinese Taipei’s Joanna Garland 7-5, 6-4.
Eala Turns Focus Toward Asian Games
Eala’s defeat ends her Singapore Open campaign and gives her additional time to prepare for the upcoming Asian Games. She will begin her campaign at the Nagoya City Higashiyama Park Tennis Centre in Japan.
The Filipino player already has Asian Games experience after winning a bronze medal at the 2022 Games in Hangzhou. She will now shift her attention toward the continental competition following her run in Singapore.
Meanwhile, Prozorova will continue her Singapore Open campaign against Wang as she targets a place in the semi-finals. The quarter-final matchup will test the Russian after her comeback victory over Eala.
