KARACHI: Authorities have decided to exhume the grave of medical student Syed Sultan Zafar nearly a year after his death to determine whether he died in an accident or was killed.
According to police, Sultan sustained serious injuries in an alleged accident near Karachi’s Do Darya area on July 23, 2025. He reportedly fell from the trunk of a moving car while travelling with friends.
Sultan remained under treatment for several days before he died on July 30, 2025. However, his family has maintained that he was killed and demanded a transparent investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death.
The FIR states that Sultan was sitting on the trunk of a moving vehicle with another friend. Police said the car was travelling at around 20 kilometres per hour when he suddenly fell and suffered a severe head injury.
His grave was initially scheduled for exhumation on September 30, but authorities could not carry out the procedure on that date. He was buried at Shah Latif Khoi Goth in Karachi.
Police have now formed a seven-member medical board under Professor of Radiology Dr Saba Sohail. The board includes a neurosurgeon, forensic medicine specialists and medico-legal officers.
Authorities hope the examination will provide evidence to clarify the circumstances surrounding Sultan’s death and help determine whether the incident was an accident or a criminal act.
Sultan was the maternal grandson of renowned doctors Professor Syed Tipu Sultan and Professor Dr Sher Shah Syed. His mother, Dr Mehr Afroze, had donated his kidneys after his death, helping save two patients.
