A Swiss luxury wristwatch worth approximately $290,000 has been returned to a Tokyo store after being stolen last week, accompanied by a handwritten apology note.
According to local media reports, the Audemars Piguet watch was stolen when a man posing as a customer visited a shop in Tokyo’s Nakano Broadway shopping complex. The suspect asked employees to let him try on the expensive timepiece before fleeing with it still attached to his wrist.
However, the incident took an unexpected turn when the store received a package containing the stolen watch and a handwritten note expressing an apology.
The package reportedly arrived from Japan’s Aichi Prefecture. Store employees checked the watch’s serial number and confirmed that it matched the stolen item.
Meanwhile, Tokyo police are continuing their investigation and searching for the suspect on suspicion of theft. Investigators are also examining the package details to identify the sender.
The incident follows another major theft in August, when four luxury watches worth approximately $1.3 million were stolen from another shop in the same shopping complex. Police subsequently arrested two suspects in that case.
