SpaceX is preparing for Starship’s first orbital flight next week, marking a major step toward future Moon and Mars missions.
The company announced that the launch is scheduled for Tuesday at 7:15 am local time from Texas.
That corresponds to 1215 GMT, as SpaceX prepares for the 14th test flight of its massive Starship rocket.
Starship Heads Toward Orbit
During the upcoming test, SpaceX will also attempt to deploy 26 Starlink satellites into orbit.
The company described the orbital mission as an “exciting new phase” for Starship development.
Starship remains central to SpaceX’s ambitions for developing a fully and rapidly reusable launch system.
“Flight tests until this point have intentionally flown passively safe suborbital trajectories to maximize public safety,” SpaceX said on its website.
“By going to orbit, the next phase of developing Starship to be fully and rapidly reusable can begin.”
The planned orbital mission therefore represents a change from earlier tests, which followed suborbital trajectories.
Earlier Starship Tests Faced Major Challenges
Starship’s development has included several test flights that failed to complete their planned missions.
Some rockets exploded during testing, producing dramatic fireballs that Elon Musk has described as “rapid unscheduled disassembly.”
However, the most recent Starship test flight in July was largely successful.
It was also the first test following the company’s record-setting initial public offering, described as the largest in history.
The upcoming flight will provide another major test of Starship’s progress toward orbital operations.
More Milestones Remain Ahead
Although reaching orbit would mark an important development, Starship still has several milestones to complete.
For example, the spacecraft has not yet successfully demonstrated refueling in space.
That capability remains among the requirements before Starship can support commercial flights or missions to the Moon and Mars.
Therefore, the planned orbital flight represents another stage in a longer development process for SpaceX’s flagship rocket.
If the test proceeds as planned, the company will begin a new phase focused on orbital operations and reusability.
