After sharing a video that seemed to show a stranger in his hotel room, India’s Virat Kohli said he is “very paranoid” about his safety.
The video appears to show someone recording themselves while walking around Kohli’s hotel room in Perth. It was first posted elsewhere on social media.
An investigation is ongoing, according to the hotel, and a “contractor stood down.”
Kohli wrote on Instagram, “I’m NOT okay with this kind of fanaticism and complete invasion of privacy.
“Where can I really expect any personal space at all if I can’t even have privacy in my own hotel room?”
The video featured former captain Kohli, one of cricket’s most recognisable figures, with the caption “King Kohli’s hotel room.”
I’ve always appreciated that, Kohli continued, “I understand that fans get very happy and excited seeing their favourite players and get excited to meet them.
However, this video is disgusting and has left me feeling extremely paranoid about my privacy.
“The ICC is incredibly disappointed by the gross invasion of privacy suffered by a member of the Indian travelling party at the Crown Perth, during their team’s pre-event preparation ahead of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2022,” a spokesperson for the tournament’s organisers, the International Cricket Council, said.
“We are aware of an incident involving a contractor and the privacy of a guest at Crown Perth,” a Crown Resorts spokesperson said.
“The security and privacy of our visitors are our top priorities, so we are deeply disappointed that this incident took place.
“We sincerely apologise to the offended guest and will keep doing everything in our power to make sure this doesn’t happen again.
“This behaviour is completely unacceptable, and it is well below the standards we expect of our team members and contractors.
Crown launched an investigation, stood down the involved parties, and removed them from the Crown account as part of its immediate response to the problem. The original video was quickly taken down from the social media website as well.
“We are also cooperating with the Indian Cricket team and the International Cricket Council to convey our apologies and will continue to work with them as we progress our investigation.”
