Just hours after the national team’s Twenty20 World Cup loss to England, a Sri Lankan cricketer was detained and charged with allegedly sexually assaulting a lady in Sydney, according to police.
He was widely recognized in the local media as batsman Danushka Gunathilaka, who had a hamstring injury in the first round of the World Cup and was forced to withdraw.
The 31-year-old was replaced in the lineup but stayed in Australia with the club.
Without identifying the individual, New South Wales police stated in a statement that “Sex Crimes Squad detectives have charged a Sri Lankan national following an investigation into the alleged sexual assault of a woman in Sydney’s east last week.”

Early on Sunday morning, the man was detained at a Sydney hotel and charged with four charges of having sex against his will.
Bail was denied to him.
Gunathilaka, a left-handed opener, made his international debut in 2015 and has since played 46 ODIs, 46 T20s, and eight Tests.
