The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is hopeful that pace spearhead Shaheen Afridi would be able to play in the Twenty20 World Cup in Australia later this year, even though Afridi has traveled to London to continue his recovery from a knee injury.
Afridi, a left-handed fast bowler, was nominated to the preliminary team by the PCB for the upcoming Asia Cup in the United Arab Emirates but is now unable to play due to an injury he sustained in Sri Lanka last month.
It was announced on Monday by PCB’s chief medical officer Najeebullah Soomro that Afridi would be moving to London to receive “uninterrupted, devoted knee expert care,” since London is home to some of the world’s greatest sports medical and rehabilitation facilities.
It’s in the player’s best interest, so we’re sending him there. Our medical staff will be updated daily on Shaheen’s condition, and we have every faith that he will be fully recovered in time for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup.
The PCB announced that the medical panel would decide when the 22-year-old may resume playing competitive cricket.
Pakistan hosts seven Twenty20 Internationals against England beginning on September 20 and then travels to New Zealand for a tri-series that also features Bangladesh.
Pakistan, the tournament’s two-time reigning champions, will kick up their Twenty20 World Cup campaign with a massive match against India, their bitter rivals, on October 23 in Melbourne.
